Rest Day: Burra
We are so tired we need a rest day! No, really, this was planned. Two days to explore historic Burra before we set out on our return trip to Bendigo on our bikes.
It took so long to get here yesterday, how could we possibly ride back? Not possible!
St Mary’s Church
Beautiful stained windows. Here’s a couple.
The Mine
Lots of history and derelict and restored buildings here. A great place to wander.

The Brewery Cellars
Walking down the steps to the cellars, a voice scares the crap out of me and I literally jump. Then there he is, John Jarvis, in all his mad glory, on a TV screen. Apparently Wolf Creek 2 was filmed in these cellars. I prefer them to be used for storage of booze.
Hampton Village
An old derelict village, where people lived until as recently as the 1960s. It has a very nice tree.
Burra Gaol
An old gaol is always good for a bit of creepy atmosphere.
The Police Lock Up
Burra Town Hall
There’s an enthusiastic volunteer at the Town Hall when we finally get in (after two previous attempts when it wasn’t open yet). There’s a world of district history stored here, including old theatre costumes, and a pretty awesome projector set up. This hall has seen many glory days. We need one of these in Heathcote for the Film Festival!
Worlds End
About 20km from Burra you’ll find Worlds End. You might not step off the edge of the world here, but it seems a pretty nice place to camp, if you are the camping type. On the banks of the Burra Creek, ancient river gums, some of which have grown gnarled and twisted are one of the attractions.
Local history suggests a family story that a settler named Eliza was asked her opinion of the harsh area, and she remarked it was “like the end of the world.”
PS – I’ve hunted around, and it seems that this particular place does not require an apostrophe!
